HOMEIntroduction to KLSGMessages from the Center Director

Alvin Toffler is expected that an ability to filter out unnecessary knowledge from lots of them will be an important factor of the future society. A solution for the problem of future information-oriented society like information flood would be spatialization, a combination of existing information and location information. Land informationization based on GIS technology is spatialization, and a core infrastructure to create higher value-added products in the future information-oriented society.

In Korea, landform management including mapping technologies has been started in 1950 with support by foreign countries. The technology level in the field was low because almost nobody was concerned about it. However, with our creativity and driving force, rapidly changing technologies relevant to geography information were imported in a right time, and national GIS projects were also started timely in1995.
Many research projects, as national GIS projects which were engaged with our IT development, helped us to understand and learn many technologies. Also, they gave us opportunities to accumulate a lot of high-quality human resources.

Now, it is the time to confirm this technology as ours, to develop it into the best technology in the world, and to make Korea a standard nation for international land informationization and standard nation. Geospatial information infrastructure, which is built up by this new technology, should be connected to the improvement of national welfare and the creation of national profit.

The Korean Land Spatialization Research Project is an innovative research project to develop the future growth engine which enables the core infrastructure. This project is a R&D project, and KLSG is the institute managing the R&D project. So to speak, it is a cluster of distributed research capabilities and the dispersed research aggregates, functioning as an institute that can be called “Land Spatial Information Technology Research Institute.”

The followings summarize the roles of KLSG.

An institute managing spatialization projects which associate land information with location information
An institute to promote practical use of research products which disseminates core infrastructure technologies to create higher value-added by applying GIS R&D technologies to high-tech cities and intelligent construction, and to enable the technologies to be exported as international standards.
An R&D institute for ubiquitous technologies that transform land information technologies into technologies in a life.

We will do our best to make this website be a place to interchange information in the fields of GIS in Korea and a gate to inform the GIS capabilities of Korea to the world.
